The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59, preventing the Chiefs from winning three Super Bowls in a row. This was their second Super Bowl win in seven years. Jalen Hurts won Super Bowl MVP. Coach Nick Sirianni was seen crying after the game, and he praised God multiple times during his interviews.
As an Eagles fan I couldn't be happier. I was so excited when this happened. After the collapse they had last year, this is exactly what they needed to bounce back. Adding a phenomenal running back in Saquon Barkley was MUCH needed. Barkley went over 2,000 yards on the ground, and was 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson's rushing yards record.
And getting two great defensive players in the draft in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper Dejean was big. Mitchell had a quiet regular season, but had two interceptions in the playoffs. DeJean had a huge pick six in the Super Bowl. Both were up for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Howie Roseman had his best off season in a long time, and it translated to greatness. Signing Barkley and Zack Baun, drafting Dejean and Mitchell, hiring Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio, trading for Kenny Pickett, all of these are big moves that ultimately ended in hoisting the Lombardi.
This game was a rematch of Super Bowl 57, in which the Chiefs defeated the Eagles 38-35 on a game-winning field goal by Harrison Butker. Hurts said he used the confetti from the end of that game as his wallpaper on his phone for motivation, and it looks like it worked. Hurts finished with 221 yards, 2 touchdowns and a pick. Current Chiefs coach Andy Reid is the winningest coach in Eagles history. Reid spent 13 years in Philadelphia, from 1999-2012, and led the team to Super Bowl 39.
The Eagles are currently the favorites to repeat next year already. Will they actually do it? We'll see.
Go Birds!
