The Florida Gators have won the NCAA men's basketball championship. They defeated the Houston Cougars 65-63 in the championship game. The Gators were down 42-30 early in the second half, but they rallied to tie the game at 60 with over 3 minutes left. Houston had a 63-62 lead with 90 seconds to go. Will Richard then blocked the Houston 3 which might've been the dagger. The Gators then failed to score, but so did the Coogs. Alijah Martin was then fouled, and made 2 free throws to put the Gators ahead. Richard then stripped the ball from Houston. Denzel Aberdeen was fouled. He made 1 of 2 free throws to put Florida up 2. Houston coach Kelvin Sampson called a timeout. The final play was a disaster for Houston. Milos Uzan attempted to get a clean look for a championship winning 3, but two Gators locked him up. Uzan passed to L.J. Cryer, who passed to Emanuel Sharp. As Sharp attempted the 3, he was met by Walter Clayton Jr. and lost control of the ball, and the ball rolled around on the ground. The Gators picked it up and preserved their first title in 18 years.
This was one of the wildest national championships I've seen in a while. The Gators looked dead early in the second half, and I have no clue how they came back. The last play, as hated as it is, I thought it was wild. I have to give credit to Florida, they played incredible defense on that last possession, and Todd Golden is a hell of a coach for taking a school that had a mediocre basketball team and making them a great basketball team. Congratulations to Florida!
